Notes:
1) The Community Innovation Survey (CIS) is a European data collection that provides, among other things, information on the innovation activities of enterprises. Compared with the national innovation survey conducted by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) (see the "Innovation and Patents" topic area in the BMFTR Data Portal), the CIS data cover a narrower population of enterprises than the national innovation statistics. The CIS covers only enterprises with ten or more persons employed (national survey: five or more persons employed). In addition, Eurostat excludes a number of service sectors. Consequently, the CIS data are not comparable with the national innovation survey. See the CIS methodological framework (https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/metadata/en/inn_cis13_esms.htm).
2) The innovation rate comprises the shares of "enterprises with product innovations but no process innovations", "enterprises with process innovations but no product innovations", and "enterprises with both product and process innovations".
3) EU membership status as of February 2020 (excluding the United Kingdom).
4) Break in the time series, resulting in limited comparability with previous years.
